International Baccalaureate

Kinston High School has drawn students from throughout Lenoir County and from outside the county to its acclaimed International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for more than two decades. The program begins in the junior year of high school and centers on six rigorous subjects that aim to prepare our students for university and careers.

The benefits for students partaking in the Diploma Programme are numerous. IB students often perform better by developing strong academic, social and emotional characteristics, as well as performing better academically than their non-IB counterparts. Research shows that low-income Diploma Programme students in Title I schools enrolled in college at similar rates to all Diploma Programme students in public schools, and at much higher rates than the national average for low-income students.

IB aims to educate the whole student by producing learners who are:

  • Balanced
  • Caring
  • Communicators
  • Courageous
  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Open-Minded
  • Principled
  • Reflective
  • Thinkers

IB students develop these qualities through courses that encourage them to make connections between subjects and prepare students to be part of the constantly changing global community. As a pre-university course of study based on international standards, the IB program is infused with global consideration in every subject area. Students have an opportunity to study their subjects in depth across the curriculum, conduct independent research, perform complex assessments and develop compassion for others.
