For a school year forced to start later and still end on time, the school calendar approved Monday night by the Lenoir County Board of Education for 2016-17 is remarkably similar to the calendar for this school year.
Next fall, the academic year is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 29, for virtually all LCPS students. That’s five days later than the first day of the current school year, but in accord with state law that mandates public school starts on the Monday closest to Aug. 26.
The last day of school for students in 2017, barring calendars changes due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, is set for Friday, June 9. School ends this year on Friday, June 10. State law requires public school to end by June 11.
Natural day shifts in the 2017 calendar year helped LCPS compress the school year a little and still meet state requirements for instructional hours as well as preferences of teachers, parents and students for holiday schedules.
For instance, school resumes after the Christmas break two days earlier than it did this past January because Jan. 2, 2017, falls on a Monday – which also reduces the number of days school is closed for the holiday to eight from 10.
Others significant dates in this calendar include:
— Thursday, Aug. 18: Teachers and staff return to school
— Wednesday, Nov. 23, to Friday, Nov. 25: Thanksgiving holiday
— Wednesday, Dec. 21, to Friday, Dec. 30: Christmas vacation
— Friday, April 14, 2017, to Friday, April 21, 2017: Easter break
— Wednesday, June 14, 2017: Last day for teachers
Holidays are also scheduled for Sept. 5 (Labor Day), Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), Jan. 16 (MLK Day) and May 29 (Memorial Day).
The calendar approved by the school board was the favorite of three presented to LCPS employees by a district calendar committee. The main difference is that this calendar granted a Good Friday holiday while the other two did not.
This calendar applies to all LCPS students except those enrolled at Lenoir County Early College High School. Early College’s schedule is designed to coincide with the calendar of Lenoir Community College, which hosts the high school. Early College students start and end the school year about three weeks ahead of traditional students.
The first day of the 2016-17 school year for Early College students is Monday, Aug. 8, and school is scheduled to end on Friday, May 19.
