They might not be able to solve the chicken-or-egg puzzle, but second graders at La Grange Elementary School will learn a lot more about embryology thanks to a grant that teacher Jennifer Sutton won from the North Carolina Farm Bureau.
The Ag in the Classroom Going Local grant for $130 will allow Sutton to purchase books to accompany the second-graders’ Life Cycle Unit on chickens.
“The grant will provide several different books for second-grade classrooms that explain the life cycle of chickens,” said Sutton, whose classes hatch baby chicks each spring.
The grant will impact about 84 students this year.
The grant award praised Sutton for seeing her young students are “actively involved in exploring phenomena in the natural world, posing questions and seeking answers as they arise.”
Alton Roberson, president of the Lenoir County Farm Bureau, presented Sutton with the check.
