Students at Northwest Elementary School have something to sing about since the school’s collection of books with musical themes has grown by 40.
In November, music teacher Teresa Singer was awarded a $650 grant from the N.C. Electric Membership Corporation to buy books about music. Now the books are installed in the school library.
“The books are some of the favorite titles students hear in the music room,” Singer said. “Now that they have easy access, they can read them for themselves and take AR tests. The books provide rich and diverse experiences in hopes that something will ‘strike a chord.’”
Singer’s grant award was part of nearly $6,900 in grant money awarded LCPS teachers by the state EMC, including $369 awarded to Northwest art teacher Debra Raines, which was also earmarked for books for the school library in keeping with Northwest’s emphasis on literacy and reading skills.
In addition, a member organization, Tri-County EMC, provided $12,500 in grants to other LCPS teachers last fall in a separate competition.
