LCPS Hosts Inspiring Special Olympics Event for Student-Athletes
Lenoir County Public Schools proudly hosted its annual Special Olympics event on Wednesday, bringing together more than 100 student-athletes and dozens of dedicated volunteers for a day centered on inclusion, perseverance, and celebration.
Throughout the event, students participated in a variety of activities and competitions, cheered on by peers, staff, and community members. The atmosphere was filled with encouragement and excitement, highlighting the strength, determination, and sportsmanship of every participant. The official Special Olympics oath, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt,” was evident in each moment of the day.

The event was also supported by several community leaders, all of whom came out to show their support for LCPS students and families.
“This is one of the most special days we have as a district,” said Superintendent Williams. “Seeing our students compete, encourage one another, and truly enjoy the moment is what education is all about. We are incredibly proud of every athlete who participated.”
Exceptional Children’s Director Georgia Maready also emphasized the importance of the event. “This day is about more than competition. It’s about providing opportunities for our students to shine, build confidence, and feel celebrated for who they are,” Maready said. “We are grateful for the support from our staff, volunteers, and community partners who make this possible each year.”
The district extends its sincere appreciation to Parks and Recreation and all community partners whose support and collaboration helped make the event possible. Their commitment ensured a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved.
As part of the festivities, schools also competed in a Banner Contest, showcasing creativity and school spirit. Congratulations to this year’s winners:
