    September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, drawing attention to the inherited red blood cell disorder that disproportionally affects African Americans. A Kinston High health science class used the occasion to bring in a NC Central University scientist for a virtual lesson on the disease.

  • Graduation rate climbs two points, tops state mark

    Data reported by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction last week put the 2020-2021 combined four-year cohort graduation rate for LCPS’s five high schools at 87.2 percent, up from 85.4 percent in 2019-2020. The state average for the Class of 2021 was 86.9 percent, compared to 87.6 percent for the previous school year.

  • Math coach inducted into ECU Educators Hall of Fame

    Constance Wallace Cheston, who retired in 2014 after 33 years with Pitt County Schools only to return to the schoolhouse as a mathematics curriculum specialist with LCPS in 2017, was one of four educators honored at the 22nd annual Educators Hall of Fame induction ceremony sponsored recently by the ECU College of Education.
